  • Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Race Team

The Company believes that competitive sailing reflects our core values and as such is the main sponsor of the Sun Hung Kai Scallywag race team, Hong Kong’s professional off-shore sailing team. We believe the team’s spirit of excellence and endurance is a source of inspiration for all our employees, business partners and the community at large.

The team competed on behalf of Hong Kong in the renowned Volvo Ocean Race 17-18, one of the toughest sailing challenges in the world. The team spent more than eight months sailing over 45,000 nautical miles across four oceans.

Since the Volvo Ocean Race, the team operates Scallywag, a 100-foot super maxi race yacht together with SHK Scallywag/FUKU, an ORMA60 trimaran. Just as SHK & Co. today has transformed itself into an all-weather investment partner, the team continues to develop under the Company’s sponsorship. The spirit of the vessel and its crew echoes the Company’s own ethos – Endure. Adapt. Excel.

    Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Foundation

Inspired by Team Sun Hung Kai Scallywag’s journey and achievements over the past few years as well as its ethos of excellence and endurance, the Sun Hung Kai & Co. Foundation (“Foundation”) established the Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Foundation (“SHK Scallywag Foundation”), aimed at building a sailing legacy in Hong Kong and supporting youth development through the sport.

The youth program of SHK Scallywag Foundation offers under-represented youth free introductory courses. Students keen to pursue sailing further will be considered for scholarships.

As a platform for the Group’s partners to support the community, the Foundation aims to grow this initiative by cooperating with other like-minded partners and sponsors.

Since the launch of the initiative in May 2019, over 100 youngsters from the under-represented families of Hong Kong have been out on the water for sailing. Three new boats, named Sun Fish, Star Fish and Jelly Fish – were launched on 14 September 2019. These new boats, along with our ongoing partnership with Hebe Yacht Club and Sailability Hong Kong, should see our initial groups of sailors through to Hong Kong Sailing Federation Level 2 certification by year-end.

Officially inaugurated on 4 May 2019 at the Hebe Haven Yacht Club (HHYC) Open Day with its first batch of trainees on the water, the SHK Scallywag foundation will offer under-represented youth free introductory courses run by Sailability Hong Kong and HHYC, which will lead to Hong Kong Sailing Federation Level 1 and 2 certifications. Students keen to pursue sailing further will be considered for scholarships.

Lee Seng Huang, Group Executive Chairman of Sun Hung Kai & Co., said at the event, “We believe sailing helps nurture important qualities, such as resilience, discipline, teamwork and leadership, and as such, should be made more accessible. This launch is the first step of a broader initiative to build a long-lasting sailing legacy in Hong Kong.”

    May 2019

Sponsored by the Foundation and Sun Hung Kai Scallywag team, the Dalton Learning Lab AR and VR tent hosted over 5,000 children in Hong Kong over two weeks during the Hong Kong Race Festival of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Incorporating art, virtual learning and augmented reality, activities were aimed at teaching young children about marine life and the importance of protecting our oceans.

Through Team Sun Hung Kai Scallywag, we are proud to support the Clearly Campaign. Poor vision is the largest unaddressed disability in the world, despite advancements in healthcare and technology. Over 700 years after spectacles were invented, the striking inequality of access to eyecare remains a crucial impediment to the growth of developing economies. The campaign aims to bring together innovators, scientists, technology firms and big business on one hand, and investors, governments and NGOs, on the other hand, to address this problem and help the world to see.

Carrying this message on its 45,000 nautical miles journey around the world, we aim to help raise awareness of this highly meaningful cause.

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation exists to preserve the Great Barrier Reef for future generations. Today, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation takes the lead in raising funds to develop and deliver projects grounded in science and action on the ground to protect and restore the Great Barrier Reef and other coral reefs around the world. Through Team Sun Hung Kai Scallywag we are pleased to support this cause, carrying this message on its 45,000 nautical miles journey around the world.

Almost 300 sailors, including those with disabilities, participated in the Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Foundation Open Dinghy Regatta at Hebe Haven Yacht Club. With four different race courses, action packed racing was enjoyed by all on the 172 dinghies that took part.

Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Foundation hopes to raise awareness and inspire adventurous youth of the incredible sport of sailing through sponsoring various sailing events.

    May 2021

Since 2019, through sponsoring the sailing courses, the SHK Scallywag Foundation has raised awareness and supported more than 1040 individuals from the under-represented youth of Hong Kong to enjoy over 140 days out on the water learning to sail (as of end-2021).

To make sailing accessible to everyone irrespective of their ability, age, gender, ethnicity or status, in 2021, the Foundation has launched a ONE-for-ONE program and organized 3 sailing camps during school breaks (summer, mid-term and Christmas), where each individual student who signs up for a sailing camp, sponsors one under-represented youth of Hong Kong for the opportunity to learn sailing. In our sailing camps, students learned basic boat handling and safety techniques and acquire skills to sail a dinghy in light winds, enabling them to gain a Level 1 and 2 certifications from the Hong Kong Sailing Federation.

During the last summer camp, the week wrapped up with an overnight camping experience, where students got out of their comfort zones and learned key elements to a survival situation, such as building shelter with limited resources and safe fire-starting techniques. They also got engaged in activities that promote nature conservation such as identifying and using edible and medicinal plants for healing purposes. In addition, an interactive animal show allowed students to get up close to different animals and reptiles while understanding their adaptations to the environment.
